Furniture is one of the first priority product groups identified under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) for future ecodesign requirements and Digital Product Passport implementation. The European Commission has already launched the preparatory study that will support the development of future furniture requirements, including a dedicated Digital Product Passport.

What is the Digital Product Passport for furniture?
The Digital Product Passport for furniture is the future digital record that will support the implementation of ecodesign requirements under the ESPR. A dedicated preparatory study is currently underway and will support the future Furniture Delegated Act, which will define the final product scope, data requirements and implementation rules.

Furniture is among the first product groups selected by the European Commission for future ecodesign requirements under the ESPR. The current preparatory study will assess technical, environmental and market aspects before the Commission drafts a product-specific Delegated Act.

The final product scope will be established through the future Furniture Delegated Act. The ongoing preparatory study currently covers a broad range of furniture products placed on the EU market, including household and office furniture.

EXCLUDED: bed linen, blankets, towels, curtains, rugs and carpets, etc - as they fall under the definition of textile products (containing at least 80% textile fibres by weigh) and thus belong to that category.
Expected Digital Product Passport requirements for furniture
The final Digital Product Passport dataset for furniture has not yet been adopted. However, the ongoing preparatory study is expected to support future requirements related to product durability, repairability, material composition and end-of-life management. Examples include:

- Recycled content
- Durability information
- Repairability information
- Spare parts availability
- Disassembly guidance
- End-of-life information
The final mandatory dataset will be established through the Furniture Delegated Act and related implementing measures.
DPP data carrier requirements for furniture
Under the ESPR, every Digital Product Passport must be accessible through a data carrier physically linked to the product, its packaging or accompanying documentation. Product-specific implementation requirements for furniture will be defined through the future Delegated Act.
